SA surfer Jordy Smith qualifies for Olympics

The Durban surfer has earned his provisional place to represent the country and compete in Tokyo.

RED Bull Surfer Jordy Smith has been announced as one of 18 athletes to qualify through the WSL Championship Tour (CT) for selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Following his result at the Quiksilver Pro France, the South African is guaranteed to finish within the Top 10 on the WSL CT Rankings and therefore has earned his provisional place to represent the country and compete in Tokyo.

“Wow, dreams do come true. It’s been something I have thought about since I started surfing. Such an honor to be the first male to qualify and represent South Africa. I am so proud,” he said.

Smith, (31), who grew up in Durban, joined the elite tour in 2006 and has twice placed runner-up for the world title, with six CT wins under his belt.
