ETHEKWINI Municipality will be a hive of activities between 12 and 15 December when the City hosts the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) Games.

The games were launched in 1998 and have produced household names likes Comrades Marathon multiple winner, Bongumusa Mthembu and football players including Siyabonga Sangweni, Siyabonga Nkosi, Amanda Dlamini and Veronica Phewa.

All district municipalities will be participating in 16 sport codes to be played in sports facilities across the City.

“The City will host over 4100 participants from districts municipalities who will showcase their talent. I hereby make an undertaking that we will continue to invest immensely in sports infrastructure. The City has invested over R50 billion in infrastructure, through the Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit. Hosting such programmes is key in ensuring that the City and residents realise the impact of this investment,” said Councillor Ntokozo Sibiya, Chairperson of the Community Services Committee.

Councillor Sibiya said inspection of all sport facilities has been conducted and have all been given a clean bill of health. Entrance to watch the games is free and no dangerous weapons are allowed in all facilities.

Ngcobo said the City is excited to host the games which help stimulate the local economy with about 1 200 jobs expected to be created. Most of the hotels have been booked by the visiting districts. Visit www.durban.gov.za.
