DURBAN surfer, Luke Thompson has topped the World Surf League (WSL) Africa Pro Junior rankings, and has been selected as one of the five South African junior surfers to compete at the WSL World Junior Championships in Taiwan.
The Pro Junior men’s competition was a close battle between the top three, with Thompson finally taking the coveted number one spot with two event wins at the Ballito Pro Junior and the BOS Cape Crown.

As the WSL Africa Pro Junior winner for 2019, Thompson said he is privileged, proud and honoured to be invited to the WSL World Junior Championships.
“I want to have fun, and hopefully win. I’m looking forward to travelling with the team, and the dynamics of competing against the best in the world. I’m still 15 so even if I don’t win, I look forward to gaining experience competing at that level. I hope to do our country, my sponsors, family and my surfing community proud,” said Thompson.
Commenting on the five surfers taking on theWSL World Junior Championships, Colin Fitch, WSL Africa Regional Manager, said: “This is such a strong group of junior surfers from the Africa region that I expect to see either a world title or some great results. All of these young surfers have won events here in South Africa and have gained a lot of international experience during all our WSL Africa and City Surf Series events in 2019.”
The WSL World Junior Championships takes place at Jinzun Harbor, Taitung Country, Taiwan from 26 November to 1 December.
