Help breathe new life into Mitchell Park tennis club

The community is encouraged to help the Mitchell Park Tennis Club with sponsorship or partnerships, donations, by hiring the venue or joining the club.

MITCHELL Park Tennis Club is encouraging players to join its ranks or to support in the club’s upgrade.

Liesl Heath said the club, which was established in 1895, had always been a flourishing club, however two years ago it found itself in dire straits.

“We formed a very good committee of people who put up their hands to help, however we realised we needed someone to provide financial input on a monthly basis to keep the club running. DPHS stepped in and saved the club. We now have 100 children per week coming through to play at the club. It has been a win-win and we couldn’t do without it,” she said.

Liesl and coach, Gary Comins, said although this monthly income has been a boost for the club, there was still so much to be done to improve the facility and increase members.

“We have started work on the club and have fixed ceilings, put in new chairs, downlights and fans, but this all costs money and we have a long list of improvements still to be tackled,” said Liesl, adding that the women’s bathrooms needed an overhaul, and any donations from a building company or paint store would be very helpful.

Gary said not only was there a need for sponsorship and members, but the club house was available to hire for socials and parties, and the court was available for hire to the public for events such as team building.

Oldest club member, 81-year-old Lyster van der Brugge, said the club used to be ‘magnificent’ and as a committee member, he hoped to see it transformed to its former glory.

“We need enthusiastic players to join the club to get the weekend matches on the go again,” he said.

The club is hosting a Lollipop Tennis Series tournament for players from five to 11 years old on Sunday, 1 September, and people are encouraged to go along and support.
