SA Champs and Eston MTB next up for Marais

Pre-entries for the Illovo Eston MTB Challenge are open and will be accepted until 28 July.

AS the mountain biking season builds up to the South African Cross Country Championships and beyond to the UCI XCO World Championships, national selection hopeful Stuart Marais has singled out the Illovo Eston MTB Challenge on Sunday, 4 August, as an important part of his month’s racing.

Defending champion Marais is expecting there to be another strong field this year for the 60km Illovo Eston Marathon. “The usual suspects should be there like Andrew (Hill), Tyronne (White) and Julian (Jessop),” the Expedient Africa rider said. “The race has become one of those iconic races that you have to do and along with the Sappi Karkloof Classic is one of the top one day races that you can race.”

Marais will be hoping for one of the spots in the South African team that will do battle at the UCI Cross Country World Championships in Canada at the end of August into September. Should he make the side, or not, Eston is going to form an important part of the remainder of his racing year. The Illovo Eston MTB Challenge, which will be at the Eston Farmers Club, will be the eighth leg of the popular and ever competitive Quattro ROAG Series, powered by Momentum.
