Young DHS sportsman has hopes set on Serbiaw

"I am appealing to the public to assist in making my son’s dream come true."

ASPIRING waterpolo player, Mahle Makhanya, a learner at Durban High School (DHS), is appealing to the community to help him raise funds to travel to Serbia in June for an intense training camp.

Mahle, who has swimming since he was four, took up waterpolo in 2017 when he joined the school. He has become a well-recognised member of the DHS waterpolo team and currently plays for the U16A and 1st team.

He has participated in a few development programmes and is also a member of East Coast High Performance Waterpolo, under Mr S La Marque. Mahle participated as part of the KZN invitation team in the CANA Zone IV games in 2018 in Durban, and also participated in the Sterrenberg Waterpolo Tournament in 2018 and 2019, hosted by Selbourne College.

“Mahle has been selected to go to Serbia in June for intense training, which I believe will help him become one of the best players in the future, as he aspires to represent South Africa nationally. One of his greatest wishes is to introduce waterpolo to disadvantaged communities around Durban, as well at primary schools as at the moment there are not enough schools that offer waterpolo at grassroot levels,” said his proud mum, Ayanda.

She said the challenge she is facing at the moment is raising funds for this tour.

“I am appealing to the public to assist in making my son’s dream come true. Any form of help will be appreciated to make this a reality for him,” she said.

If anyone can help, contact Ayanda on 074 385 0474 or Ayanda.makhanya@nhls.ac.za.
