KZN Softball teams strong at nationals

KZN Softball took part in the National Provincial Championships.

THE KZN men’s and women’s softball teams did battle last week in East London at the National Provincial Championships.

Both men’s and women’s divisions played a provisional round robin to qualify for a Top 4 Championship Round Robin and both KZN sides qualified.

The women’s team ended fourth after this championship round and the men’s team progressed to the Grand Final which saw Limpopo (four time champions) beating the team 2-0 in a very well fought contest.

Individual accolades were achieved at the tournament as well by KZN players and officials. Reece Nyland was the top batter in the men’s division and Cara Hetem from Umbilo was the second top batter in the women’s division.

KZN had success with their technical officials as well. Carol Hetem and Heather Whitfield went as official scorers and wrote exams to qualify as Level 4 Scorers. This makes them eligible to go on international tours as scorers.

KZN Softball extended its appreciation to the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation for assistance in getting the teams to – and accommodated in – East London.
