SIX Harlequins cricket teams played league matches during the course of last week-end.

Saturday saw the sixth team lose their division seven match against Simplex Reservoir Hills 3 at Siripat Road 1.

On Sunday morning a damp wicket dealyed the first team match against Umzinto which was subsequently reduced to 35 overs. Harlequins fast bowler Kevin Kettle captured three top order batsmen for just 17 runs in his 7 over allocation. Umzinto’s number two batsman staved off the onslaught with a solid contribution of 24 runs. Quins second change bowler, Jordan Bryan, delivered with aggression capturing three wickets for 25 runs off five overs. Right arm off cut bowler Mohammed Patel performed admirably during the final stages of Umzinto’s innings claiming two wickets for 25 runs in 5 overs. Darryl Govender struck 33 runs off 16 deliveries taking Umzinto’s total to 110 runs in 27,4 overs.

Quins initial response was plausible but lost their first wicket at 19 runs in the ninth over, both openers were removed by the 10 th over, further wickets in the 12 th 13 th 14 th and 16 th overs left Quins as non favourites in this match. A sparkling contribution by Daniel Smuts comprising 16 runs and an undefeated innings of 41 runs by Faiyas Safri was insufficient to avoid a defeat for Harlequins by just 16 runs.

This week-end the first team play their penultimate 50 over promotion league match at Harlequins 1.

Practices for seniors will be on Tuesdays and Thursday at the Harlequins nets. A family day and awards event will be held at the Harlequins cricket fields from 10 am on Saturday 30 March 2019. Contact Ernest on 031 4673270 for further club information.
