Runners flock to Comrades talk

"Running is movement, we analyse your running style."

OVER 200 Comrades Marathon enthusiasts crammed into the Coastlands Musgrave Hotel for the, ‘Run Your Best Comrades’, talk hosted by the Prime Human Performance Institute and the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation on Wednesday evening. Runners were treated to insights from a stellar line-up of experts.

“The Comrades talk organised by the Department of Sport and Recreation and Prime is an important platform that will assist all Comrades participants to have better and proper preparation in good time for the 2019 event,” said KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sports and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Molo.

While Comrades green number holder and Biokineticist, Dennis Jackson, hosted an incredibly informative panel discussion featuring three-time winner Bongmusa Mthembu, Fikile Mbuthuma, Lisa Collet, Jenna Challenor and esteemed running coach, Michael Seme, head physician at Prime HPI and current SA Olympic Doctor, Kevin Subban, gave a talk that focused on managing illness and injuries leading up to race day.

“In the early training phase, if you have an injury, it is important to consult a medical professional. “If you are going on a long journey, like a trip from Durban to Cape Town you will always check the condition of your car, it is the same thing with the Comrades and the human body. Managing your body along the route is important. A lot can go wrong during the race and you need to be able to deal with whatever comes your way,” Subban explained.

Experienced dietitian, Keri Strachan spoke about recovery and the importance of a balanced and healthy diet. Jaryd Rudolph’s talk defined the role of biokinetics and how the science can help runners.

“Running is movement, we analyse your running style and look at improving your movement. Importantly, we do not change your style of running but we rather look at increasing your running efficiency,” said Rudolph.
