Quins win by five wickets

Harlequins Cricket Club's first team won its encounter against Umlazi, securing five log points.

ALL seven of Harlequins Cricket Club’s teams were engaged in cricket matches during the final weekend of summer.

On Sunday, 24 February, Quins’ first side travelled to Comtech for a 50 over a side encounter against Umlazi Cricket Club. Quins’ strike bowlers were less successful than usual, however it was their right arm medium pace off cutter bowler Mohammed Patel who dismissed the opposition’s entire middle and lower order to end up with figures of nine overs for 15 runs with a five wicket accreditation. Umlazi’s innings terminated in the 42nd over with their score on 169 runs.

Due to the absence of their usual opening batsmen, Quins used two of their rather capable lower order batsmen up front in an effort to quell Umlazi’s strike bowlers, a decision which paid some dividend. However, with wickets lost in the sixth, ninth, tenth, twelfth, and nineteenth overs, the latter of which had the score on 76 runs, left Quins as non favourites to win this match. Number five batsman Brandon De Mellion’s innings was impressive as he struck six sixes and six fours, eleven singles and two double runs. He was partnered by Daniel Smuts who got 13 runs and Fayas Safri who struck 28 runs. Both Fayas and Brandon were undefeated when Quins passed their target at 173 runs for the loss of five wickets, winning this match by five wickets in the 31st over. The team earned five promotion league stream one log points.
