Durban Surf win KZN Champs

Durban Surf took top honours at the KZN Lifesaving Nipper Championships 2019.

DURBAN Surf Lifesaving Club took top honours at the KZN Lifesaving Nipper Championships at the weekend.

After a very wet Saturday morning, the torrential downpours stopped well within time to start the first event at 2pm. Thereafter the weather and sea conditions were perfect for competition and while the competition was fierce, a great time was had by all.

“Lifesaving as a sport has a place for everyone and this year it showed! Several young athletes who only joined the sport for the first time this season were able to earn very respectable positions in both the beach and water disciplines. From the little U9s all the way through to the U14s, everyone enjoyed themselves. The wonderful spirit and camaraderie of all the youngsters ensured that anyone new to the sport would be hooked for life,” said Dustin Ambrose from Durban Surf.

While the emphasis is on having fun, KZN Champs is a hard fought competition attracting clubs from all along the KZN coast. A special mention must go to the smaller clubs like Scottburgh and Warnadoone who always arrive with a great attitude and quality competitors who certainly hold their own against the stronger central clubs.

In the end there has to be a winning club and for 2019 the honors went to Durban Surf Lifesaving Club.

Final positions were: 1st: Durban Surf, 2nd: Umhlanga Rocks, 3rd: Marine, 4th: Scottburgh, 5th: Warnadoone, 6th: Pirates and 7th: Winklespruit.
