Partnership enables safe cycling

Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic has partnered with Cycle Lab for safe training rides.

THE safety of cyclists is top of mind for the organisters of the annual Tsogo Sun Amashova race who have partnered with Cyle Lab to offer cyclists safe guided training rides during September until 14 Octrober, leading up to the big race that takes place on 21 October.

“We are delighted to have partnered with Cycle Lab this year for this safe and structured training initiative to help cyclists who are keen to improve their times or even just ready themselves for the race. Cycling safety has become a major issue on our roads and the number of fatal incidents involving cyclists is unacceptably high,” stated Amashova race director, Annie Batchelder.

According to Cycle Lab’s National Marketing Manager, Sean Badenhorst, the Tsogo Sun Amashova training rides are aimed at beginner and intermediate level riders with distances ranging from 30km to 70km. The rides will start and finish at Cycle Lab Cornubia and to ensure cyclists can train safely on the open roads, Toyota and AVIS have provided following vehicles.

“We are not specifically catering for fast or experienced riders as they usually are fine in terms of routes and looking after themselves. The training groups will cycle along routes that we feel are moderately challenging and rewarding and which offer optimal safety. We have specified average speeds scheduled for each group and have not allowed for any stops as these disrupt the organisation and safety of our rides,” stated Badenhorst.

Cycle Lab will supply the necessary guides and group marshals for the organised rides in a similar format that has already been done in Gauteng.

Entries are already open for this year’s race, and the closing date for online entries is 20 September at 11pm. Email melissa@amashova.co.za or visit www.shova.co.za.
