Nippers take to the ocean

DURBAN Surf Lifesaving Club hosted its nippers open day at North Beach on Sunday morning.
This was the first day of the nipper season which runs until March and culminates in the SA Champs in Port Elizabeth.
Lifesaving is the only sport that gives children the skills to save lives and gain employment as a lifeguard worldwide later in life.

Children from U9 to U14 are taught water skills, safety, how to read the currents and how to use rescue crafts and have to pass a theory test and swim before they can go to compete in the water.
“This sport is about education and safety and the children are competent in the surf by the end of the season. Once they reach U13 and U14, they qualify to be a lifesaver,” said U10 coach, Dustin Ambrose.
Training takes place every Sunday from 7.45am until around 9.30am depending on age groups.
