Durban rowers shine in Zimbabwe

Grant Kennard from Glenwood Boys High, Awande Ndlovu and Londa Zungu from Durban High School and Rudy Bellengère from Westville Boys High excelled at a regatta in Zimbabwe.

FOUR boys from Durban Rowing Club were recently selected by the South African Junior Clubs Rowing Association to form part of the South African team invited to attend the 2018 FISA Regional Development Training Camp held at Mazowe Dam, Zimbabwe, from 25 June to the 29 June, and the Zimbabwe International Rowing Regatta on the 30 June.

The boys were Grant Kennard from Glenwood Boys’ High, Awande Ndlovu and Londa Zungu from Durban High School and Rudy Bellengère from Westville Boys’ High.

The purpose of the tour was to create an opportunity for club rowers to improve their rowing skills, to expose them to an international racing experience and to recognise them for their achievements over the last rowing season. Five African countries participated in the training camp, which provided the juniors with an opportunity to not only experience the camaraderie between their own SA team members, but with other young rowers from across Africa.

The Durban rowers did their coach, Hilary Abraham, as well as their club, school and family proud by doing extremely well in the Zimbabwe International Regatta, winning nine medals in total.

Awande and Londa won the gold medal for the Junior Men U16 double scull, Grant and Rudy won the silver medal in the Men’s A double scull final, Rudy crossed the line second in the Junior Men U16 single scull to claim the silver medal, and in the Men’s A coxed quad final, Grant and Rudy’s SA crew came second to claim the silver and Awande and Londa’s SA crew came third to claim the bronze. An excellent achievement from the boys who walked away with not just their medals but extra rowing skills and valuable racing experience.

With more and more people becoming aware of the sport of rowing in KZN, the Durban Rowing Club Junior team is expanding. Its members, both girls and boys, compete on both school level and club level at various regattas around the country during the year.

Durban Rowing Club will be hosting its Head of the Bay Regatta on 25 August, where rowers of all ages will race either the 8km or 12km course within Durban Harbour.
