Soccer legends preview upcoming season

The event featured a discussion of the upcoming season, both locally and abroad, by soccer legends Jerry Sikhosana and Brian Baloyi.

HOLLYWOODBETS hosted its Durban leg of the 2018/19 Soccer Season Launch at its Yusuf Dadoo branch on Friday, 27 July.

The event featured a discussion of the upcoming season, both locally and abroad, by soccer legends Jerry “Legs of Thunder” Sikhosana (Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana), and Brian “Spiderman” Baloyi (Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana). Hundreds of eager soccer fans were thrilled to meet these well-known former players, and to hear their take on the season ahead.

Throughout the discussion, there was great banter between Sikhosana and Baloyi whose never-ending rivalry is well documented and started back in their school days. They previewed different leagues such as the South African PSL, English Premier League, Italian Serie A as well as the UEFA Champions League.

Sikhosana announced that he would be backing his beloved Orlando Pirates to win the PSL title, while Spiderman’s money is on Mamelodi Sundowns. Both legends foresee Real Madrid struggling after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure and expect Juventus to challenge for the Champions League thanks to acquiring Ronaldo’s services.

Fans were also given the chance to put questions to the former players. When asked about his decision to leave Kaizer Chiefs, Baloyi said he felt the need to focus his energy on the development of young goalkeepers because most of them did not make it overseas. The Brian Baloyi Foundation has plans in place to form a goalkeeper’s academy that will unearth and nurture young talent.

After the panel discussion, there was time for fans to get autographs and take pictures with the former PSL superstars. The event was hosted by “Eggs” Benedict Ngwenya, East Coast Radio’s resident soccer expert, and Hollywoodbets team member. Customers were treated to refreshments and two lucky winners also walked away with the newly-released soccer kits of their favourite teams.
