Glenwood teen to represent SA at baseball world cup

Nathan Grobler will be representing South Africa at the U15 Baseball World Cup in Panama City, Panama in August.

ONE of the brightest new prospects in the game of baseball in South Africa is Glenwood resident, Nathan Grobler.

The 15-year-old will be representing South Africa at the U15 Baseball World Cup in Panama City, Panama in August.

He is one of three players from KZN to be part of the squad. The tournament will give scouts from all over the world an opportunity to get an early look at the players.

“I’m privileged and honoured to have the opportunity to play, but I’m nervous and excited all at the same time. These tournaments give you a chance to see where you are, compared to what the best of the world has to offer,” said the Grade 10 Glenwood High School learner.

Grobler, a right hand pitcher, plays for local club Cardinals and has made the KZN provincial side since the age of eight. He said he knew baseball was made for him after playing his first game.

Although this trip to Panama is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, he has been tasked to raise R30 000 for his flights and travel expenses.

His parents, Morne and Renee, are desperately trying to raise funds for Nathan to fufill his dreams. With an official letter from South African Baseball Union, they are planning to host various fundraising events as well as appeal to the communities for their assistance in sponsorship and donations.

“Any contribution, whether a donation of cash or goods, however big or small, which could be raffled at our upcoming fundraiser events, would be most gratefully received,” said Renee.

Those wishing to assist can contact Morne Grobler on 083 301 0768 or Grobler.morne123@gmail.com or Renee Willemse on 061 336 0327 or renee.willemse556@gmail.com.
