Nurse Thembi ready for Comrades first

Local nursing assistant. Thembi Ncengeni, will run her first Comrades Marathon on Sunday.

THEMBI Ncengeni, an enrolled nursing assistant in the Emergency Department at Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital, is excited to be running her first Comrades Marathon this year.

Being a mom of three and working night shift in Emergency are what keeps Thembi occupied on a daily basis. She discovered a passion for running about four years ago when she decided to start running to get into shape. She fell in love with the sport and admits to being addicted.

Balancing the impact of nursing on her life with her chosen sport, Thembi says running helps relieve the stress of her day time job.

“Nursing does have an impact on your life. Once you enter the hospital, you leave everything behind and focus on your work. It’s actually not work, it’s more of a calling. You focus on helping others. Sometimes you get stressed when you hear sad news about a patient, but you can’t help these things from happening. As a nurse you are always nursing, where ever you are. If I’m tired or really stressed after a day at work, I put on my running shoes and do 10kms or 20kms to help relieve the stress.”

Thembi is grateful for the support she’s received from her family, friends and her employers.

Responding to Thembi’s achievement, Ahmed Docrat, the hospital manager, said: “We are super proud of Thembi. We support her fully and wish her well on her first Comrades Marathan.”
