Foundation extends challenge to cyclists

“We challenge people to get involved, either by riding in the colours of the Domino Foundation, raising money or helping as a volunteer on the day."

WITH thousands of cyclists set to converge on Durban for the aQuellé Tour Durban on Sunday 29 April, the Domino Foundation, the main beneficiary of the race, has issued its own challenge to riders and supporters to get involved in the iconic event.

The Domino Foundation runs an extensive programme impacting around 6 000 people each day in communities around Durban and in the Western Cape. It channels the income it derives from the race each year into its seven programmes, ranging from a babies’ home to feeding, early childhood development, life skills and skills development, Red Light anti-human-trafficking and a recycle Swop Shop.

“We challenge people to get involved, either by riding in the colours of the Domino Foundation, raising money or helping as a volunteer on the day. Simply by taking part in the event, every single rider is making a contribution to the Domino Foundation, but there are plenty of ways for people to get more involved, like booking a corporate package or helping out at our water point,” said Rowan Phillips of the Domino Foundation marketing team.

Phillips said that the annual cash injection from the race, which amounted to R175 000 last year, is spread across all of its programmes.

“The money equates to around 58 000 meals, and helped us teach a good portion of the 640 000 life skills lessons taught by our mentors. A goal of our Feeding programme is to provide ‘Food For Thought’, where we don’t just fill empty stomachs. Research has shown that nutrition can directly affect mental capacity of school children,” he explained.

The Domino Foundation has secured a special charity batch for the 45km race. To cycle in the Domino Foundation colours, contact Tarin Stevenson on 031 563 9605 or email tarin@domino.org.za.
