World class pump track built in run up to world champs

Trail builders are being mentored in construction of pump track ahead of the South African qualifier for the Pump Track World Championship in Durban.

CYCLISTS and spectators can expect some great sporting action on Saturday, 28 April, when the 5th leg of the Red Bull Pump Track World Championship series, hosted by the eThekwini Municipality’s GO!Durban Cycle Academy and the Durban Green Corridor (DGC), takes place at the KwaDabeka Bike Park.

While valuable partners such as Red Bull and Sasfin have made this event possible, some hard work by local DCG trail builders went into the creation of a world class pump track, ensuring that some specialist labour skills landed locally.

The first Velosolutions pump track in the province was completed a month ago, under the design and guidance by world-renowned former competitive MTB cyclist and owner and manager of Velosolutions, Claudio Caluori.

The construction of the pump track at KwaDabeka began in February and took four weeks to complete. Six Durban Green Corridor’s trail builders were brought onto the construction team to build the track and learn valuable skills from Claudio. This core team of six will now be able to use the knowledge gained to help create more tracks, as the Municipality continues to develop bike parks as part of its non-motorised transport strategy to encourage a culture of cycling and walking within the City.

“Developing these tracks is very specialised and involves levelling the site and putting in the drainage systems, a critical part of the maintenance of the track. The construction team had to bring in the soil which is the most important phase as this is where the track starts to take shape and the berms and angles need to be exact. Finally the top layer of asphalt had to be laid and then compacted into the shape and design of the course,” Shaun Peschl, Sports Director of the GO!Durban Cycle Academy, said.
