Quins lose to Umzinto

Umbilo Harlequins Cricket Club lost to Umzinto by five wickets.

FIVE of Umbilo Harlequins’ cricket teams were involved in league matches on Sunday, 14 January.

The stream one Challenge League side took on a composite team from Umzinto at Harlequins in a 50-over-a-side match. Quins having lost the flip of the coin call were requested to bat first. Four of Quins’ top five batsmen placed their team in a favourable position by the 24th over losing just four wickets with the tally on 144 runs.

Opener Aziz Khan applied himself well scoring 44 runs. Kevin Kettle scored 24 runs inclusive of some powerful lofted drives and a one-handed sweep shot to the boundary. Momedthala Motala executed an innings comprising a mix of good cut shots and some nifty running between wickets scoring 32 runs. Faiyas Safri was arguably the most superlative of Quins batsmen stroking the ball around at random, inclusive of some great pull shots and drives, scoring 31 runs.

Quins made 153 runs by the 33rd over, which was a below par target to defend considering the favourable batting conditions. Fast bowlers Kevin Kettle and Sylvester Sauli captured two wickets each, conceding runs at an economically commendable run rate. They were aided by some penetrative orthodox right arm slow bowling by Andrea Del Moro who captured a wicket. The remainder of Quins bowling attack was largely ineffectual, and combined with some poor fielding by some of Quins players, Umzinto were able surpass the target in the 36th over, winning the match by five wickets.

Other team results: Quins’ 5ths beat Makhuta by 26 runs.

The club invites juniors, especially 10 and 11 year old players, to join the club in order to beef up its junior representation in the youth leagues.

Junior coaching sessions will be on Thursdays from 4.30pm and seniors will practice on Fridays from 4pm.
