Rugby dream comes true as Glenwood boy joins Sharks

JJ van der Mescht said he is excited about the opportunities the new year has in store for him.

GLENWOOD High School matriculant, JJ van der Mescht’s passion for rugby will see him studying sports management through the Sharks Academy at the Kings Park Stadium campus this year.

The matriculant, who received his final results on Friday, is currently training for the Super Rugby season.

JJ, said he was excited about the opportunities the new year had in store for him.

“I got a diploma pass in my final exams and did better than I expected. It has been great being at Glenwood and I have had good opportunities through being here,” said the former Pretoria boy.

JJ was spotted by the Sharks and was taken into the Sharks Academy at the age of 15.

“I have a junior contract with the Sharks and they have paid for my tours to Grant Khomo and Craven Weeks. I signed a three-year contract with the Sharks on my birthday last year and am now part of the Sharks Super Rugby squad. I am very amped for this year and am looking forward to what lies ahead,” he said.

JJ has been playing rugby since the age of four and is excited that it is something he will be able to do professionally now that he has finished school.

“Since I was little I have wanted to be a rugby player. I am glad I am also getting the opportunity to study. It is busy, as we also train for three to four hours every day, but I am enjoying it,” he said.
