Join Stella Athletics

If your New Year's resolution is to get fit, Stella Athletics Club needs you.

WITH the new year fast approaching, bringing with it people’s desire to get fit and healthy, Stella Athletics is encouraging new members to join the club, which is one of the oldest in Durban.

Kevin Hendrikse from Stella Athletics said the club is well-known, popular and well established and has a diverse membership, very reflective of the community.

“Our members are largely from Glenwood, but we also have runners from Musgrave, Umbilo and Morningside areas. We have a lot of younger members, especially women, who enjoy the safety of running in groups. We encourage people who are looking to get fit, to get out of their homes and be safe in the new year to join the club,” he said.

Stella Athletics has a beginners group, which starts off walking and gradually grows to running 5km, a morning running group which runs at 5am, for those who are busy in the evenings, a Tuesday and Thursday group which runs at 5.15pm, a Saturday running group, as well as a group which caters for walkers on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

“The club caters for everyone and on a social level, it is great as members meet a lot of people. Running is so good as it increases fitness and helps people to destress. We are very serious about running at this club, and have around 100 runners taking part in the Comrades Marathon each year,” he said.

Kevin said the membership of the club is currently at around 220 people, however the goal is to take this up to 300 next year.

“There is room for growth, and the new committee at the club has also created a rejuvenated energy. So if your New Year’s resolution is to get fit, the club needs you!” he said.
