Quins narrowly lose challenge league match

Umbilo Harlequins Cricket Club lost by 11 runs to Umlazi in a challenge league match.

ALL localised cricket matches were cancelled by the Durban and District Cricket Union on Friday afternoon due to preceding rain.

Umbilo Harlequins Cricket Club’s fifth and sixth teams utilised the opportunity to achieve some game time against opposition clubs.

The first team played its scheduled challenge league stream one match against an Umlazi side at Harlequins one.

Umlazi consolidated the innings to 116 runs before the sixth wicket was claimed by Quins. Umlazi’s number eight batsman added 40 runs to take his team through to a formidable total of 192 runs, the team being dismissed with 10 deliveries remaining. Aside from fast bowler and former Protea member Yusuf Abdulla, medium pacers Faiyas Sastri and Mohammed Patel who performed commendably, none of Quins’ other bowlers were sufficiently penetrative to beat the bat with the regularity required to be effective and consequently conceded a high run rate.

Quins’ number two batsman Aziz Khan played a splendid innings comprising 41 runs, supported by Faiyaz Sastri who knocked off 20 runs, and number seven batsman, Kevin Kettle, who scored 53 runs inclusive of four fours and four sixes. His wicket however fell at 164 runs being out leg before wicket. With just 30 runs required for victory Quins were still the favorites, however the remaining four wickets fell in quick succession through poor batsmanship, allowing Umlazi victory by just 11 runs.

The club will host a sixes tournament on Saturday 16 December.
