SA Legion riders soldier on in epic ‘Shova event

SA Legion cyclists will use an Elliptigo to ride the 65km Amashova race.

TEN members of the SA Legion have taken up the 65km challenge at this year’s Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic on a unique bike, an Elliptigo.

The Elliptigo has no saddle and riders pedal standing up. According to Uday Raniga from Elliptigo, elliptical cycling combines the best of running, cycling and the elliptical trainer. “It is basically running without impact. The Elliptigo strengthens a runner’s legs and enables them to run better, injury free,” he said.

Johann Kruger shows how he pedals standing up on the Elliptigo.

Johann Kruger from the SA Legion said he met Uday at the Comrades Marathon expo, and said he felt the Elliptigo was a unique vehicle. Its use reminded him a lot of military training. He said Uday was more than willing to lend the SA Legion Elliptigos to ride the race this year.

“To ride the 65km race in this manner is going to be challenging. We are aiming to create a remembrance for fallen soldiers and the hardships they endured,” he said.

Johann said there would also be a couple of cyclists who would be riding in the SA Legion colours using traditional bicycles.

“SA Legion members will be at the start of the race offering cyclists temporary poppy tattoos and we encourage as many cyclists as possible to ride showing off these tattoos in memory of fallen soldiers,” he said.

The community is encouraged to donate towards the SA Legion’s efforts at this year’s cycle race.
