Harlequins win challenge league match

Harlequins' first team won its match against ACC at the weekend.

FIVE out of Umbilo Harlequins’ full complement of eight teams were engaged in league match activities on Sunday, 15 October.

The first team took on ACC in a challenge league match. Medium pacer Aziz Khan took two wickets for 22 runs in four overs and right arm orthodox slow bowler Eric Cavanagh captured two wickets for 16 runs in four overs. The rest of Quins’ bowlers had credible bowling spells all adding to ACC’s eventual demise with their total on 121 for six in 20 overs.

Quins’ opening batsman Kevin Kettle and number four batter and captain Ryan Baronet, both scored 30 runs with an array of sixes and across the deck boundaries in a clinically calculated fashion. Saiyaz Safri at number four in the batting line up, added a dynamic score of 20 runs to the grand tally. Aziz Khan and Mohammed Patel added value in the middle order with 15 and 17 runs respectively, aiding Quins’ grand tally to 122 runs for the loss of just four wickets in 17.3 overs. Quins won this encounter.

In the afternoon, Dawn Height’s Cricket Club of Stanger arrived at Harlequins’ main oval for the final match of the current group T-20 tournament. Quins loss the coin toss and were requested to bat first. Opener Mohammedthala Motala racked up 17 runs, number three batsman Saiyaz Safri made 35 runs and middle order batsman Aziz Khan made 24 runs helping Quins on to a good total of 119 runs for the loss of six wickets.

Dieter Liebenberg was handy with his right arm wrist spinners capturing two wickets for 23 runs in four overs. Saiyaz Safri’s medium pacers claimed two wickets for 21 runs in four overs and Aziz Khan took two wickets for nine runs in two overs. Quins won by nine runs at the termination of 20 overs and go through to the semi-finals of the KZNCU Challenge league T-20 tournament next weekend.

Other team results: Quins 2nds lost to Silver Saints; Quins 3rds beat DHS/Rhythm 3; Quins 5ths lost to Clares 4; Quins U13s beat Mpumalanga U13s.

All aspirant players from 10 to 13 years are invited to attend free coaching sessions at the Harlequins nets on Thursdays from 4.30pm. Seniors practice on Fridays from 4pm.
