Harlequins win T-20 Challenge

Harlequins' first team won its match against Tongaat at the weekend.

FOR the second consecutive week, the Durban and District Cricket Union announced cancellation of all league matches under its jurisdiction, as a result of sodden fields and wickets on Friday morning.

However Umbilo Harlequins Cricket Club’s first team played its third group A Challenge T-20 match against Tongaat at Outspan in Tongaat central on Sunday morning.

The match was reduced to a 10-over-a-side shoot out during which Quins bowled first. Eric Cavanagh’s spell of just two overs of right arm orthodox slow bowling proved sensational wherein he captured four wickets and spilled a catch off his final delivery. Tongaat mustered up 88 runs with the loss of seven wickets. Tongaat’s opening batsman Mahem Reddy top scored in the match with 41 runs.

Quins’ batsmen responded to the run chase losing just three wickets and surpassing the target with two deliveries remaining. Kevin Kettle top scored for Quins being undefeated with 35 runs which comprised three sixes and one four. Opener Faisal Barakzai’s dedicated training sessions paid handsome dividends as he achieved 30 runs inclusive of one six and three fours.

The club invites players between the ages of 10 and 13 years to attend free coaching sessions at the Harlequins nets every Thursday afternoon from 4.30pm.

Seniors practice on Friday afternoons from 4pm.
