Top surfing at Wave Wizards event

Awesome waves and weather greet Wave Wizards Club surfers.

AFTER the howling South Easter that prevailed most of the previous week, the Lizzard Hurricane Surf contest got off to a perfect start at Bronze Beach Umhlanga with an ocean that offered up sizeable 4-6ft wave faces and a contestable 2-3 foot bowl wave.

Close on 70 surfers took part in 28 heats throughout the day and there were many stand outs.

In the Open Men’s division Justin Sykes opened up with a high scoring 7.5 on a left in the final and beat his rivals Kyle Lane, Matt Kruger and Nathan Wallace respectively. It was a very close call for second and third between Kyle Lane and Matt Kruger but all surfers gave it their all. Justin Sykes from Salt Rock was also voted the ‘Surfer of the Contest’

In the very competitive masters division it was series leader Carl Roux who took top honors again with a heat total of 9.5. Rein Van de Wall was close on his heels with a total of nine points. Chris Knutsen placed third and Mike Frew placed fourth.

Local surfer Jaime Irvine claimed victory in the low scoring U18 boys’ final. He beat surfers Saxton Randall, Jordon Boshoff, Tide Lee Ireland and Richan Van Reenen into the placings.

Westbrook Surfer Gabi Lailvaux opted to surf out at the backline to secure her win, while her opponents Gaby Herbst, Kirra Attfield, and Maya Potgieter preferred the bowl wave on the inside. Gaby Herbst was the decisive winner in the U12 girls’ division ahead of Louise Lepront, Maya Potgieter and Kirra Attfield.

In the U14 boys’ division it was very close for first between Jordon Boshoff and Julian Carbonal. However it was Jordan that took the win ahead of Julian, then Luc Lepront, Cameron Jacob, and Evan Spittal

One of the fiercest divisions was the U12 boys, and run away winner was Thor Knutsen who showed why he is the son of three times world champion surfer Chris Knutsen. He took the win with a 2.5 point excess in the totals. Just one point separated the placed surfers Evan Peyios, Julian Carbonal and Owen Slack

Damien Frew cored a total of 11.5 to take the win in the novice division, with Jarod Pretorius in second, Indie Van de Wall third, and Trent Louriero fourth.

Jestyn Viljoen, club chairman, said: “I would just like to thank Anthony Molgowa and his team of lifeguards for always making us feel welcome and being so helpful. Thanks to Lizzard and Hurricane Surf for the great prizes and continued support and to all the parents, family and surfers for supporting our great Wave Wizards Club.”
