Sandile places 24th in Mandela marathon
Sandile has raised a total of R1172.82 so far through the Back a Buddy campaign, and he said his project will continue.
DURBAN Child and Youth Care Centre champion, Sandile Nyoka, excelled at the Mandela Day Legacy Marathon.
Running to raise funds for the Centre, Sandile aimed high, placing 24th in the 21km race.
“The race had over 15 000 runners and over 6 000 who participated in the 21.1km race, so it was highly contested. It started about 6am and it was very cold. It took me about four minutes to start running as I was at the back in the start, so I had to pick up the pace to cover the lost minutes and it paid off,” he said.
At the half-way mark, Sandile was in the second group behind the leaders from Lesotho, Kenya and Ethiopia.
“They were running like they had V8 engines! In my 18th kilometer I slipped on a water sachet and fell, but I quickly got up and dusted myself off and continued the race, trying to keep up with the leaders. The race was difficult and I am happy with how I ran. I’m proud of myself to come 24th out of around 6 000 runners. The race was well organised and I enjoyed it,” he said.
