Back this running buddy and help our children

The community is encouraged to support local runner, Sandile Nyoke, on his Back-a-Buddy page.

KEEN runner, Sandile Nyoka, is encouraging the community to support him via his Back-a-Buddy page, at his next run on 27 August, where he aims to raise further funds for the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre (DCYCC) where he works.

Sandile took on the Mandela Legacy 10km Challenge on 30 July where he finished in 5th position, something he didn’t think he would be able to achieve as he had been ill days before.

“I aimed for a good finish in the top 10, and trained well for the race, but the Friday before I developed flu symptoms and my coach made me take medication and rest. On the Sunday morning I was feeling better so I took part. It was a hard run as we were facing the wind and I started feeling ill again afterwards. I did feel fresh during the race and my coach was happy with my finish, although he was cross with me that I ran as I wasn’t feeling well. If I had been feeling 100 per cent, just imagine what I could’ve done! I was very happy with my result,” he said.

Sandile Nyoka is using his running skills to raise funds for the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre.

Nicolette Modicka from DCYCC who registered Sandile as a Charity Champion on Back-a-Buddy, an online crowdfunding platform after he had approached her to help him to find a way he could generate some funds for the organisation, said the challenge was that not many people had taken to the story and call to action to donate.

“We have been following the page and so far we had received small donations totaling R160. He is showing his potential, so I hope more people will donate for the next race,” she said.

Mandy Goble, director of DCYCC, said this was R160 more than they had before and it was more about the heart Sandile was doing it with, than the money. She encouraged Sandile not to be discouraged.

“I’m not discouraged and I am looking forward to the next race, the Mandela Day Marathon. This is one of the big races and I will be doing the 21km run. I have started training and am feeling very confident. I have a lot of time to train and improve on my times, and by the time I get there on 27 August, I will be sharp! I am hoping to be in the top 10 again,” he said.
