IT was all smiles for the Pietermaritzburg fan favourite, Bongmusa Mthembu, as he ran across the finish line to win the 92nd Comrades Marathon from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
Miraculously, the KZN athlete won this year’s straining uphill race after he nabbed the third place at last year’s downhill run.

Mthembu’s final time was 05:35:34.
This is his second Comrades win after he took the top spot in 2014.
The South African was followed by Hatiwande Nyamande (5:38:48) and Gift Kelehe (5:41:49)
Last year, David Gatebe won the race in a record-breaking five hours, 18 minutes and 19 seconds.
Physically difficult in the first half, mentally challenging in the second. These athletes are just phenomenal @ComradesRace
