Sherwood dancers make history

This is the first time dance has been recognised as a sport.

HIP hop dancers from Sherwood Primary School made history on Friday, when they were awarded their KZN colours for dance, the first time dance has been recognised as a sport at.

School principal, Dean Unger, said he was proud that out of the U13 team of 10 children capped at a ceremony on Friday night, seven came from Sherwood Primary.

The learners’ journey began when SA hip hop coach and Olympic Ambassador, Craig Bullock, was invited to speak at speech day. He encouraged the school to take part in the inter-schools dance competition at the end of March.

The school got a team together, and after much practice, took part in the competition, winning the primary school section for hip hop dance. From there the children took on a number of fixtures, working towards competing for KZN.

The children and their coaches were capped at the ceremony on Friday and will now work towards taking part in the inter-provincial tournament on the South Coast at the end of June, where eight children will be chosen to represent South Africa.

“We’re so excited! The dancing is so modern and upbeat and so different, but the children have taken to it naturally, we are so proud of them and their coaches,” said Dean.

Coach and manager, Sanusha Govender, said she would continue to work hard with the children and said they couldn’t have achieved what they had without Dean’s support.
