Glenwood’s Jethro prepares for European sailing champs

A young local sailor is training for his trip to Noordwijk on Zee in the Netherlands during the July school holidays.

GLENWOOD sailor, Jethro Brophy-Tintinger, has had a busy few weeks going from one sailing competition to the next and proving himself under extreme conditions and with different boats.

He was the skipper of the Point Yacht Club Team that won the inaugural Ethekwini Maritime Cluster Regatta – the first in what is hoped will become an annual event to foster growth and interest in Youth sailing locally and nationally.

All teams were on the one-design L26 yacht which produced some excellent sailing. A team from the Cape and sailors from Germany gave added interest to the event.

In the Hobie 14 Regatta held off Durban’s beachfront with winds of 30 knots at times over the Easter weekend, he persevered, finishing as 1st Youth, keeping up with the internationally-classed adults, finishing 6th overall.

On the weekend of 29 and 30 April, Jethro had to use technique to sail in the lightest of winds, finishing 2nd in the Laser class of the Richards Bay leg of the SA Sailing Open KZN Grand Slam.

All of the events are part of the preparations for his trip to Noordwijk on Zee in the Netherlands during the July school holidays where he will team up with a Dutch sailor in the Hobie16 Open European Championships.
