Prize money for hand cyclists at aQuellé Tour Durban

Hand cyclists will finally have their own class and prize money at the aQuellé Tour Durban.

FOR the first time, hand cyclists taking part in the aQuellé Tour Durban on 30 April will compete in their own class, with prize money for the riders that race onto the podium.

The event attracted numerous hand cyclists in 2016 including former Sharks rugby wing Cedric Mkhize. But the 2017 edition of the race will be the first to have a specific category and prize money for hand cycle competitors over the 45km race distance, with presenting sponsor Bridge Fund Managers offering a cash prize of R2500 for the winner, R1500 for the runner up and R1000 for third place .

Ari Seirlis, CEO of the QuadPara Association of South Africa, welcomed the introduction of a hand cycling category, and said there was no doubt that the hand cycling fraternity would be pleased to be acknowledged as their own race category.

“The QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA) is thrilled about the sponsorship for the hand cycling category. The event embraces the opportunity for hand cyclists to participate and now this added benefit of acknowledging 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. This will certainly encourage more participants, and of course ensure better performances. QASA thanks the sponsors for the investment and the insight,” said Seirlis.

The aQuellé Tour Durban, presented by Bridge Fund Managers includes a 105km road race for men and women, a 55km cyclocross race for men and women, and a 45km Fun Ride which has attracted the likes of East Coast Radio DJ Darren Maule and Breakfast Show co-presenter Sky Tshabalala in 2016.
