Blind cricketers to take on Gauteng

"This tournament will give us a chance to include some female players who have an immense passion for the game."

The KZN Blind Cricket team blew away their Gauteng counterparts in a friendly series a few years back and are aiming to do the same in a tournament this weekend.

This time Gauteng will field some players that have just returned from the World Blind Tournament in India. Gauteng is desperate to put in a better showing and although the KZN Blind Cricket team will include many female players, it will not be a walk in the park. Skipper and president, Michael Dlamini, is very experienced and has taken part in many national tournaments. He is working hard to prepare the team.

Founder of KZN Blind Cricket and former manager of the South African Blind Cricket team, Shane Mahabeer, said: “We have drafted a number of young players into our structures and this will be an excellent chance for our youth players to get onto the park. .”

Mahabeer said some talented players had been unearthed and he felt the team was moving in the right direction. He also paid special thanks to the sponsors who assisted in making the tournament possible.

“This tournament will give us a chance to include some female players who have an immense passion for the game. Our overall aim is to eventually create a women’s team in the province. Many other countries already have a women’s team and in the near future there will also be a Blind Women’s Cricket Team World Cup,” said Mahabeer.

The tournament will run from 18 to 21 March with the awareness T20 games being played at the Kingsmead Oval, behind Standard Bank building on 20 March at 9am. A T20 match will be played at the Sirpath Grounds Reservoir Hills on 19 March at 9.30am.

The public is welcome to watch the blind cricketers in action.
