Teens shoot for the stars

Four Durban teens will represent South Africa at a PeacePlayers International camp in Norway.

PEACEPLAYERS International South Africa (PPI-SA), an organisation which uses basketball to unite, educate and inspire young people, has opened doors for many of its participants.

Nomfundo Ngcobo (18), Thetha Nxumalo (18), Meagan Montiere (15) and Ayanda Dlamini (14), four local teenagers involved in the programme, are among those whose lives have been impacted in a positive way. They will travel to Norway this week, after they were selected to represent PPI-SA at the Erasmus Lead4Peace, a youth leadership development programme camp.

The teenagers are no strangers to travel as they visited the Eastern Mediterranean Island of Cyprus where they represented PPI-SA last year. The Cyprus camp resulted in the young leaders being invited by Nesodden IF Basket, a subsidiary of Nesodden Idrettsforening in Norwary, to attend the follow up Lead4Peace basketball camp, all expenses paid.

PeacePlayers International is a global organisation with programmes in Cyprus, Middle East, Northern Island and South Africa. PPI-SA focuses on promoting peaceful coexistence among diverse communities, while providing a positive extracurricular outlet and leadership opportunities for those from disadvantaged communities.

The young leaders will not only be representing PPI-SA, but also their communities of Glenwood, Umlazi, Lamontville and Wentworth, and their country. The camp will be held from 10 to 16 February with a total of 60 participants attending from Cyprus, Northern Ireland, the Middle East and Norway.
