Local athletes rewarded

Athletes from CKS Athletics Club were recognised for their achievements at the club's awards evening.

CKS Athletics Club held its 2016 awards evening at Glenwood Christian School recently, to recognise the achievements of the club’s athletes throughout 2016.

At the awards Clyde Kinloch, club administrator, welcomed special guests and gave a report back on 2016 with lows and highlights, with the biggest highlight being the club’s first Olympic medal, having achieved World and Continental medals in the past.

Another highlight was the involvement of Clyde and colleague Staci Kiloh in the Africa Senior Championships on the operational side, being Head of Competition Operations and Head Electronic Time Keeper. He also spoke about the point that the club’s coaches and people involved are all involved voluntarily giving up family time and weekends for the betterment of the athletes under their care. He also thanked his committee Kobus Blignaut, Musa Risenga and Lisa Goosen for the support and guidance through the year.

He mentioned that on 1 May the club will be 22 years old, completely unsponsored and has survived on annual club fees and levies and voluntary support. He reported back on the year’s achievements especially the athletes out there producing the goods, naming especially Dominique Mann the ASA #3 women’s pole vaulter, and Jan-Frederick van Zyl, the ASA #1 U16 boys javelin thrower and also the 4th all-time best for a 15 year old in the country. Then the highlight was Tyrone Pillay’s Paralympic bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

2016 award winners were: Cross-country certificate – Caylee Ellero, road running certificates – Caylee Ellero and Dale Kinloch, dedication award – Lisa Goosen,

Bent Golf Club award (Booby Prize) – Ben Pieterse, service award by an outsider – Patrick Hlongwane, highest ranked national female – Dominique Mann, highest ranked national male – Jan-Frederick van Zyl, most improved female – Mbalente Risenga, most improved male – Dale Kinloch, most promising female – Deborah Muzama, most promising male – Jan-Frederick van Zyl, Pumpkin of the Year – Alleta Pieterse, official of the year – Staci Kiloh, IPC athlete of the year – Tyrone Pillay, coach of the year – Pieter van Zyl, master athlete of the year – Ray Muller, female athlete of the year – Marilize Goosen and male athlete of the year – Tyrone Pillay.
