Quins lose to stronger teams

Simplex Reservoir Hills Cricket Club’s first team surpassed Quins' total of 196 in the 41st over.

THE second half of the 2016/2017 cricket season started on Sunday 15 January, with all Umbilo Harlequins senior Sunday teams competing in their respective leagues.

The first team took on Simplex RHCSC from Reservoir Hills in a stream one Challenge League encounter at Harlequins. Quins were requested to bat first, after a crucial coin toss was won by Simplex RHCSC3. Opening batsmen Ryan Baronet and Mohadtalha Motala compiled a 52 run partnership, with Ryan top scoring with 34 runs and Mohadtalha getting 24 runs. Aziz Khan scored 24 runs, Daniel Watkins struck 24 runs, Trevor Campbell got 14 runs and Kalvin Venter scored 13 runs. Quins were dismissed for 196 runs in the 49th over.

Simplex RHCSC’s top order dominated Quins’ seam attack for much of their innings. Quins seamer Trevor Campbell captured three wickets for 46 runs in nine overs. Mohammed Patel was the best of the Quins bowlers, delivering some accurate off cutters at medium pace, capturing two wickets for 20 runs in 10 overs. It was a poor fielding effort that allowed Simplex Reservoir Hills Cricket Club’s first team to surpass Quins’ total of 196 in the 41st over losing seven wickets in the process.

Quins’ second team played Hillary Malvern in a 40 over Challenge Reserve match at Peace Park Malvern. Quins’ top six batsmen were skittled in rapid succession on a fast wicket. Number seven batsmen Rory Kleynhans struck 15 runs and number eight batter Mark Kritzinger top scored with 28 runs. Quins two were dismissed for 119 runs in 30,3 overs. Hillary Malvern 2 surpassed that total in the 33rd over losing seven wickets in their endeavor. Theuns Jacobs and Wayne Rittmuller captured three wickets each.

Quins’ third team took on a powerful Crusaders 3 in a 30 over division one match at Crusaders 2. Quins 3 were dismissed for 91 runs in 21,1 overs, with only Brett Williams contributing meaningful with 27 runs. Crusaders 3 had no trouble in surpassing the target in the 14th over losing one wicket.

On Sunday 22 January, Quins first side play a 50 over league match at Chatsworth 217 (Bayview), the third team verse ACC 3 at Toti 2 in a 30 over division one match and the U11s play a 30 over youth league match at Harlequins. All other teams have byes.

Cricket coaching for U11s is on Thursdays at 5pm at Harlequins and senior practice is at 4.30pm at Quins.
