Paddlers prepare for canoe marathon

The second seeding race on the KZN calendar for the 2017 FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon, the Ozzie Gladwin Canoe Marathon, takes place next month.

THE 2016 Ozzie Gladwin Canoe Marathon, one of South Africa’s premier one day canoe marathons, takes place on Sunday, 27 November.

The marathon, presented by Parklane Superspar, is a one-day race hosted by the Natal Canoe Club and is the second seeding race on the KZN calendar for the 2017 FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon.

With the Dusi being a K1 championship race in 2017, the Ozzie Gladwin will be raced in the same championship format as many paddlers look to continue their preparations for the iconic three day paddling and running spectacle from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in February next year.

Starting on Albert Falls Dam, the Ozzie Gladwin takes paddlers on a 26km route, starting with a 4km flat water lap before they run a short 1km portage around the dam wall and then get back into their boats for 21km of paddling fun on the upper uMngeni River that winds down to the finish line at Thornvale Farm on the Wartburg Road.
