Glenwood are waterpolo champs

Glenwood won a memorable match against Clifton, and were crowned the KZN waterpolo champions for 2016.

THE KZN Top 10 water polo tournament took place this past weekend.

Glenwood High School’s first team was drawn into a tough pool and wwas required to win its pool to advance through to the semi-finals.

The first match was against Northwood on Thursday afternoon and Glenwood eventually ran out worthy winners.

Day two saw them play the highly rated DHS team. The game was tight initially but as the boys gained momentum they produced some superb waterpolo and won comfortably.

On the Saturday Glenwood had two matches with the first being a critical encounter against Hilton, a “must win” match. This was the boys’ finest performance of the tournament with the team displaying some genuine talent and scoring some amazing goals to win, and in so doing securing a place in the semi-finals.

The second match of the day was against Maritzburg College and in the end the Glenwood boys were way too strong for them.

In the semi-final the boys were paired off against Hilton College. The boys from Hilton were competitive in the first quarter but in the second quarter Glenwood upped the tempo and Hilton weren’t able to respond and Glenwood won the match comfortably.

The final was between Glenwood and Clifton, a deserved match up as both teams had gone unbeaten thoughout the tournament.

The scores were neck and neck until lightning stopped the match at 4-4 with one minute and 41 seconds left. The break allowed both teams to regroup and the match restarted with Clifton on attack.

Glenwood secured a turnover ball and were able to play the ball quickly to Dylan Cronje at centre forward, who scored a truly spectacular goal. Clifton restarted with intent but some superb marking by Keagan Aiken saw Glenwood win the ball back. Glenwood held on to win a memorable match and with it were crowned the KZN Champions for 2016.
