Westville take a beating in cricket match

Glenwood High's first cricket team beat Westville by 93 runs.

THE Glenwood 1st XI kicked off the second half of the season with a solid performance against a good Westville outfit.

Glenwood won the toss and made the decision to bat first. Batting up front proved to be a challenge but the Glenwood open pair of Jean-Jacque Fourie and Joel Veeran played sensibly and weathered the storm. They scored at a steady rate of three runs to the over and shared in an opening stand of 52 runs.

The stage was set for the rest of the batsmen to play themselves in and then go on to express themselves. Joel Veeran played beautifully all around the wicket and ended on a well-played 74 runs off 112 balls. Matthew Bauer and Tinotenda Takodza also added some momentum to the innings at the end. Glenwood ended on an above par score of 217/7 of their allotted overs.

After a quick break, the boys were back on the field and Glenwood took control of the game from the ball one. The Westville batsmen had no answer to the well planned and structured bowling display. Cameron Reid showed his value with the new ball, bowling with good consistency and control. He applied pressure from his end, only going for seven runs of his seven overs including four maidens.

This pressure forced the batsmen into playing many false strokes, losing wickets at regular intervals. Daelen Fynn was the chief destroyer on the day; he bowled with great control and picked up his first five wicket haul for the first team. He ended on figures of 5/19. He was well supported by Jordan Grobbelaar and Tristyn Dudas who ended on figures of 3/31 and 2/30 respectively.

The Glenwood boys also fielded well with Jean-Jacque Fourie and Turlock Dudas taking three catches each.

Westville were eventually bowled out for 124 runs, Glenwood winning by 93 runs.
