DUT students host 11 a-side knockout tourney

Local DUT student duo cannot wait for kick off and the beginning of the Black Diamonds 11 a-side soccer knockout tournament at Currie's Fountain Grounds this Friday from 8am till 4.30pm.

TWO local DUT students cannot wait for the whistle to blow signalling the beginning of the Black Diamonds 11 a-side soccer knockout tournament at Currie’s Fountain Grounds this Friday from 8am till 4.30pm.

Sports management students, Mpumelelo Shangase and Zukile Madikizela, who have formed Black Diamonds as part of their assessment project to put together a public sporting event from beginning to end, have enjoyed the project so much they cannot wait for kick off on Friday morning.

“We are really excited about the tournament. The aim of the tournament is to raise HIV Aids awareness through sport and we have a speaker who will be engaging the players and spectators when we have a break during the matches. There will also be on site HIV counselling and testing on the day,” said Shangase.

Madikizela said the duo have decided to keep their events company, Black Diamonds, going after the tournament, because they would like to continue event management after enjoying the exciting process that went into planning the tournament. “We secured eight good teams from around Durban to compete in our tournament as well as prize money for our winners. I’d like to thank Jonsson Workwear, SPAR, Red Bull and Vuco Security for assisting us with sponsorship,” added Madikizela.
