Jiu Jitsu master a hit with MMA fans

Local mixed martial arts school, Lion's Den hosted the world renown "Encyclopedia of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu," Marcus Soares at the African Carlson Cup in Glenwood this month.

LION’S Den hosted the world renowned “Encyclopedia of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,” Marcus Soares at the African Carlson Cup in Glenwood this month.

David Verster, Glenwood’s veteran mixed martial arts expert who organised the event said Soares was an instant hit with Durban and the country’s MMA fraternity. Many fans came from around the country to the competition and seminars hosted by the legendary MMA trainer. “Soares heads the Carlson Gracie School in America, so it was great to see him coach, and share his skills and techniques with students from across the country. He heads the Carlson Gracie University so having him here is an honour as well as an eye opener with his wealth of knowledge on the sport. There’s literally nothing he doesn’t know about Brazilian jiu jitsu,” Verster said.

A local MMA fan, Wayne Symington who attended the event said, “It was a spectacular event and in essence having the competition in the heart of the city at Glenwood High and seeing the legend who made a name for himself in Brazil in action was a privilege,” he said.
