Gatebe wins Comrades, breaks men’s record

David Gatebe finished in 5:18:19, breaking the existing record of 5:19:49.

THE 2016 Comrades Marathon has been won by South African David Gatebe.

Gatebe finished in 5:18:19, breaking the existing record of 5:19:49.

In 2013, Gatebe won the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, however he has never run the Comrades Marathon under 10 hours, or made the top 10.

It was an all-South African top three for the men with Ludwick Mamabolo coming in second and Bongmusa Mthembu third, and in the woman’s race, South Africa’s Charne Bosman finished first in a time of 6:25, followed by fellow South African, Caroline Wöstmann, who struggled with an injury near the end of the race.

Kajsa Berg from Sweden was the third woman in. The first KZN woman runner, Fikile Mbuthuma made a personal best, coming in at number eight in a time of 6:56:32.
