Action heats up at Varsity Shield

The undefeated FNB UKZN rugby team ran riot against hosts FNB TUTon Monday night.

UNDEFEATED FNB UKZN ran riot against hosts FNB TUT, defeating the hosts 63-30 on Monday night at the TUT Stadium.

FNB UKZN didn’t take long to put their name on the scoreboard, as Jean Droste ran over the line in the first five minutes. The visitors took an eight-point lead, but it did not last long. FNB TUT replied with a try of their own in the 10th minute. Captain Lukas Van Zyl put the home side in the lead after converting a penalty in the 15th minute. Three minutes later FNB UKZN’s Grant Rattray put the visitors back in the lead by scoring wide on the left, which was not converted.

FNB TUT added two tries in the space of two minutes as Tshepo Nyathi scored underneath the poles, extending the lead to 25-13 for the FNB Vikings. In the 39th minute, Sibusiso Nkosi scored a try for FNB UKZN and the teams went to half-time with the scoreboard reading 25-18 to FNB TUT.

In the third minute of the second half, Jean Droste put his side back in the lead and his try was converted, making the score 26-25 to FNB UKZN. It was game on. Andrew Acton extended the lead with a converted try putting FNB UKZN 34-25 up and FNB UKZN were building seriosu momentum. Eight minutes later Sibusiso Nkosi of FNB UKZN ran over the line for the second time, before his try was converted to make it 42-25 for FNB UKZN.

Shawn Jaards pulled one back for FNB TUT, but Tristan Blewett extended the lead for FNB UKZN lead after a converted try. The score 50-30 for FNB UKZN.

With 14 men on the field, the FNB UKZN Impi did not back down after Sbusiso Nkosi received a yellow card in the 66th minute. At 74 minutes Tristan Tredder took the score to 55-30 For FNB UKZN. With 40 seconds remaining on the clock, Triston Tredder scored the final Try of the night. The score was 63-30 at full-time, in the favour of FNB UKZN.
