Rugby coaching tips

Rikus Goosen from a local sports academy gives tips on the back-line.

RIKUS Goosen from Rugga Skills Rugby Academy offers tips to rugby coaches. This week the focus is on the fly half, number 11 and 14

The wings are generally positioned on the outside of the back-line with the number 11 on the left and the number 14 on the right. Their primary function is to finish off moves and score tries. Wingers are usually the fastest players in the team and are either elusive runners, or more recently big, strong and able to break tackles.

“The skills needed for the left wing and right wing are similar, although left-footed players are usually played on the left wing as they can step and kick better off their left foot. The winger on the blindside often “comes off the wing” to provide an extra man in the midfield, in the same vein as a fullback. One or both wingers will usually drop back on opposition kicks to give the fullback extra options for counterattacking,” said Goosen.

Rugga Skills would like to wish the Springboks all the best for the world cup. Support the “Boks” and wear your green and gold on match days.

Parents and coaches can contact Goosen for any information on 081 370 2570.

Goosen said a very important number to keep on your phone is the BokSmart Spine Line 0800 678 678.

“Always play hard but safe rugby!” he said.
