Dedicated Smith trains hard for pro fight

MMA featherweight figher, Andrew Smith, is confident about his first pro fight on Thursday.

GLENWOOD MMA fighter, Andrew Smith, is going pro.

Andrew, who was featured in Berea Mail in March when he won his fight at the Maximum Fighting Championships at Greyville Racecourse, said at the time that he was excited about taking the next step in achieving his pro licence.

“I've been training hard and my pro licence went well last Saturday. It consisted of a written test on the rules of what you can and can't do in the sport, which was followed by sparring, grappling and submission defences. It lasted around three hours,” he said.

Andrew said he has now been called up by the EFC to fight in Durban at the ICC on Thursday, 27 August, with the doors opening at 4.30pm.

“I'm pretty happy as it's my home crowd. I've been putting in the hard work and am getting ready for the big stage. I'm excited and quietly confident. I'm humble though, as I know I've trained hard and I've got to trust my training. I have seen my opponent fighting at the MFC before, but I'm ready for whatever happens. It will be bigger lights and a bigger crowd, but it's still the same and I'm going to do what I do,” he said.

To make the weigh in, Andrew has been put on a strict diet consisting of two boiled eggs for breakfast, an apple and protein shake for a snack, tuna salad for lunch, egg whites with cucumber and banana for an afternoon snack and skinless hake and broccoli for dinner. “I need to be at 66kg for the weigh in. After that, I can pick up my weight for the fight,” he said.

Andrew's biggest fan, his dad is nervous but excited to watch his son take on his opponent in what promises to be a good fight on Thursday. The fight will be televised on Supersport.
