Rugby coaching tips

Rikus Goosen from a local sports academy gives tips on the forwards.

RIKUS Goosen from Rugga Skills Rugby Academy offers tips to rugby coaches.

This week the focus is on the Loose Forwards – numbers six and seven.

The number six, also known as the blind side flanker, binds to the scrum on the side nearest to the touchline. Both flankers have the fewest responsibilities but are expected to provide forward momentum and gain possession.

The number seven, also known as the open-side flanker, binds to the side of the scrum furthest away from the touchline, and is the first to secure the loose ball and get it into play after a ruck or maul.

“The position requires a lot of running – so the player needs a very high level of fitness. The flankers are normally strong and good with ball in hand,” said Goosen.

Parents and coaches can contact Goosen for any information on 081 370 2570.

Goosen said a very important number to keep on your phone is the BokSmart Spine Line 0800 678 678.

“Always play hard but safe rugby!” he said.
