Rugby coaching tips

Rikus Goosen from a local sports academy gives tips on the forwards.

RIKUS Goosen from Rugga Skills Rugby Academy offers tips to rugby coaches, this week focusing on the forwards.

This week the focus is on the hooker, which is the number 2 on your rugby jersey. The hooker is at the centre of the scrum and uses his feet to “hook” the ball to the back of the scrum.

“Hookers normally throw the ball in at line-outs. The hooker's job is the most dangerous and requires great skill. Hookers must always concentrate on warming up their necks, shoulders, lower backs and chests before a match and even before practice. This is crucial to avoid serious injuries,” said Goosen.

The hooker is in charge of the scrum and if, at any stage, he feels uncomfortable, he must reset the scrum.
