Sail Africa awards sailors

Promising sailors recognised at recent prize-giving.

SAIL Africa held its annual prize-giving ceremony at the Point Yacht Club on Saturday, 24 January.

The affair was well attended by students past and present, parents, sailors and dignitaries from the city and around the province.

Sail Africa is a youth development foundation aimed at development through the medium of sail training. Youngsters from all backgrounds are encouraged to learn to sail and, while doing so, learn independence, become physically fit and overcome their fears.

At the prize-giving four young sailors from Eden College made waves. Kesara Naidoo, Braeden Royal and Gabriel Marks won medals for improvement, while Yashir Seetal won the Royal Natal Yacht Club's Most Improved Sailor of the Year trophy.

This trophy has been won be two Eden sailors in previous years. In 2008 it was won be Siyanda Vato, who went on to earn his KwaZulu-Natal Senior Sailing colours last year, and Taalia Naidoo, who has represented South Africa in both the Optimist Class and, last year, in the Tera Class at the RS Tera World Championships. Taalia recently sailed in the Youth Nationals, where she won the Tera Sport Class overall as well, and was the first girl to do so.

Sail Africa is holding an open day on Saturday, 7 February between 9am and noon in the Point Yacht Club’s boat yard and welcomes all to attend.
