Training future soccer stars

The eThekwini municipality is aiming to train youngsters to become future football legends.

DURBAN hosted the Liverpool training camp on Wednesday 17 December, which attracted children between the ages of five years to 16 years from various African countries including Egypt, Mozambique and Nigeria.

According to the municipality, football is a global sport that transcends all fabrics of society, such as religion, race, class and gender. Youth football development programmes have become an integral part of grooming youngsters into internationally-acclaimed football legends.

The children were trained by 12 international and local coaches including some from Liverpool and others from all over South Africa.

The camp not only gave the opportunity to see some of the most talented young players showcase their skills, but also went a long way towards social cohesion.

South African boys and girls had the opportunity to train and interact with other children from other cultural, racial and social groups.

Since 1992, the country has made significant strides in developing the standard of sports, particularly football, in the country to ensure that it is on par with international counterparts.

Over and above the training camp, eThekwini Municipality hopes to incorporate the Liverpool Football Club’s coaching programme with the Soccer Academy to be built in the Kings Park precinct.
